Jaroslav Pelikan is an internationally distinguished scholar of the history of Christianity and medieval intellectual history. He joined the Yale faculty in 1962 as the Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History and in 1972 was appointed to the Sterling Professorship. He served as acting dean and then dean of the Graduate School 1973-78 and was the William Clyde DeVane Lecturer 1984-86 and in the fall of 1995. His more than 30 books include the acclaimed five-volume work The Christian Tradition. His numerous awards include the Graduate School's 1979 Wilbur Cross Medal and the Medieval Academy of America's 1985 Haskins Medal. In 1983 the National Endowment for the Humanities selected Professor Pelikan to deliver the 12th annual Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities, the highest honor conferred by the federal government for outstanding achievement in the humanities. In 1992-93 he presented the Guifford Lectures in Scotland, an honor considered comparable to winning the Nobel Prize. He has been editor of the religion section of Encyclopedia Britannica, and in 1980 he founded the Council of

Scholars at the Library of Congress. His numerous professional affiliations also includes the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, of which he is president. Two years ago President Bill Clinton appointed Professor Pelikan to serve on the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

Sterling Professor of History Emeritus Jaroslav Pelikan is the recipient of two recent honors

A four-volume work he co-edited, titled Creeds and Confessions of Faith in the Christian Tradition, will be distributed to developing countries with support from a $50,000 grant from the Virginia Farah Foundation. In addition, Pelikan's 80th birthday is being celebrated through the end of this year with a national lecture series.

Book project : The grant from the Virginia Farah Foundation will allow the complete set of "Creeds And Confessions of Faith in the Christian Tradition," which Pelikan co-edited with Valerie Hotchkiss, to be distributed to Orthodox seminaries and other theological schools of many denominational backgrounds in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America. The book was published by Yale University Press. "It is a significant project for the Virginia Farah Foundation to undertake," says Pelikan. "It signifies the willingness to help spread cultural and intellectual scholarship in the developing world to people who would not be able to afford the books."

The Virginia Farah Foundation supports creative projects that help to spread the Christian message while improving the quality of life. Seminaries and schools in countries that have emerged from communism and where theology was ignored or persecuted will receive copies of "Creeds and Confessions of Faith in the Christian Tradition." In the spirit of the program, Pelikan will forego royalties for this project. The foundation expects to send sets to about 300 schools.

Pelikan has been translating, editing and studying the Christian creeds and confessions for 60 years. The complete work includes over 225 texts, with translations from many languages. Pelikan and Hotchkiss provide a brief introduction to each creed and confession, as well as commentary and notes identifying its biblical and other sources. A massive comparative index prepared by Pelikan serves as a comprehensive guide, doctrine by doctrine, to all the creeds and confessions. A CD-ROM, which contains all the translated texts in their original languages, is also included. Creeds and Confessions of Faith in the Christian Tradition has received praise from such individuals as Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, and Roman Catholic Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Lawrence S. Cunningham, a theology professor at The University of Notre Dame, said of the collection: "There is no doubt that this new capacious assemblage will be the standard resource for the next century and an indispensable tool for serious theological research."- Yale Bulletin & Calendar : August 29, 2003

St. Cyril and Methodius ,Wednesday, May 24. 2006 Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Come for the Liturgy.

Orthodox Bible Study will be held on Wednesday evening, May 24,2006, at 7:00 pm. in the Church Library. Plan now to attend and invite a friend.

Samaritan WomAn

A significant figure in the Johannine community, the Samaritan Woman, like many other women, contributed to the spread of Christianity. She therefore occupies a place of honor among the apostles. In Greek sermons from the fourth to the fourteenth centuries she is called "apostle" and "evangelist." In these sermons the Samaritan Woman is often compared to the male disciples and apostles and found to surpass them.

Later, Byzantine hagiographers developed the story of the Samaritan Woman, beginning where Saint John left off. At Pentecost Saint Photini received baptism, along with her five sisters, Anatole, Photo, Photis, Paraskeve, Kyriake, and her two sons, Photeinos and Joseph. She then began a missionary career, traveling far and wide, preaching the good news of the Messiah's coming, His death and resurrection. When Nero, the emperor of Rome, began to persecute Christians, Photini and her son Joseph were in Carthage, in Africa, where she was preaching the Christian gospel. After Jesus appeared to Photini in a dream, she sailed to Rome. Her son and many Christians from Africa accompanied her. Photini's arrival and activity aroused curiosity in the capital city. Everyone talked about her, "Who is this woman?" they asked. "She came here with a crowd of followers and she preaches Christ with great boldness."

Troparion: Illuminated by the Holy Spirit, All-Glorious One, from Christ the Saviour you drank the water of salvation.

With open hand you give it to those who thirst. Great-Martyr Photini, Equal-to-the-Apostles,pray to Christ for the salvation of our souls.

Fr. Srboljub's Thoughts on the Sunday of the Samaritan Woman (John 4:5-42)

Imagine being the Samaritan woman, meeting Christ at the well.Because of His thirst, her life is forever changed. In speaking to her, Christ crosses barriers of culture, tradition, ethnicity, and custom. He sees in her a different kind of thirst - the longing of a dried up spirit to be revived. He sees it in each of us.We want to feel good about who we are and what we do.We want to live honest, productive lives at peace with ourselves and in harmony with our neighbors.Christ meets each of us at the well and offers Living Water so our souls may be blessed. He meets each of us at the Cross and offers us Eternal Life.Drink deeply from His cup.Embrace the light of His resurrection.Reach out to others and bring His message to them.

ON THE SUNDAY OF THE SAMARITAN WOMAN

In today's Gospel, we see clearly how Our Lord combines within His Person two natures, the human and the divine. On the one hand, we see that as a human-being, like all of us, He is wearied, thirsty and hungry. The Gospel tells us, for example, that when midday, the sixth hour, had come, His disciples left him to obtain food in the city and that Christ, thirsty, asked the Samaritan Woman for drink. On the other hand, we see that He is also divine. Living as God in eternity, He knows the present, past and future of all. Thus as God He knows that the Samaritan Woman has already been married five times and that at present she is living in sin with yet another man. Also He tells her that He can give her 'living water' from an Eternal Well, and He tells the disciples that His 'food is to do the will of Him that sent Me'.As a man, Christ was a Jew, and His disciples are therefore astonished to find Him conversing not only with a woman, but with a Samaritan Woman. A Jew would never even have talked to a Samaritan, let alone a Samaritan Woman, for as the Apostle John says in his Gospel, 'the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans'. As God, however, Christ does not hesitate to talk to one who is able to accept Him as the Messiah, for the vocation of Christ is universal. 'Salvation comes forth from the Jews', but salvation is only for those who accept Christ and few were the Jews who did accept Him.

True, from the Jewish viewpoint, the Samaritans, Jews who had intermarried with pagans, were heretics; they had rejected the importance of Jerusalem and much of the Old Testament, including the Prophets; they had confused pagan idolatry with the Old Testament.

Many Samaritans Believe
“Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers.

They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world." ( John 4: 39-42 Today’s Gospel)

The first Orthodox church to be blessed in Rome - Interfax
May 18, 2006

Moscow, May 18, Interfax - The first Orthodox church in the capital of Italy will be solemnly blessed on Friday, May 19.

The head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad currently on a visit in Rome will perform the Office of the Lesser Blessing of the church. An official delegation of the Moscow government headed by Mayor Yury Luzhkov will take part in the ceremony. The choir of the Moscow Sretensky monastery is expected to sing.
The Russian orthodox church of St. Catherine the Great Martyr was built at the Russian Embassy in Italy on the Gianiculum Hill not far from the St. Peter's Basilica. The construction was licensed in June 2002 with the Embassy's assistance, and the works began in summer 2003. The cross and the domes were blessed and installed later in March 2006.

The necessity of the construction of the first Orthodox church in the Eternal City where many martyrs had shed their blood is explained by the presence of numerous Russian orthodox believers in Rome.
The idea to build an Orthodox church in the capital of Italy first appeared in the 19th century, but the Revolution impeded the project. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs took the initiative in constructing the church in the early 1990s. Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russian blessed the initiative. A special foundation for the construction of the church headed by Metropolitan Kirill was set up in May 2004.
Both the Orthodox and the Catholics worship St. Catherine to whom the church is dedicated.
